Got back home last night (Friday 1st of April!) after 6,130kms for the trip plus 1,130 on Coops' Turbos.  Thanks once again to all those involved in getting access to head gaskets for me and to Coops for his assistance picking me up, providing overnight stays and his mechanical expertise as well as the very generous ride on his Turbos.    Was held up for 4 nights flooded in at Makay. Caught up with Buff by phone, he was flooded in too.  He pointed out when listening to my 650 rattles that it might not be running on two cylinders properly, he was right.

Not sure about superpowers but it is not the first time Richard has made an accurate diagnosis over the phone or via the internet happy0159

Missed a bit here about Buffs analysis of not running correctly.  Shortly later I had to stop and dismantle the carbs at the side of the road to remove the rubbish served up at Makay to get the engine to run on two cylinders correctly, all this in driving rain as persisting risked running lean for 750kms with resultant piston damage.

A 650 Turbo.............. That Coops puts expensive ideas into my head, naughty man.  I saw one for less that $10K just recently  mmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Les ,just out of curiousity, was the dirty card on the same side as the blown head gasket and when you had the heads off did you check the valves and seats.I am wondering if your rattle is bypass on a crook valve or burnt seat from running lean.

Buff, both carbs were dirty.  Yes we did invert the heads and filled the combustion chambers with petrol to see if the valves still sealed.  Both sealed OK.  Thank you for the suggestion and when the engine is more closely examined I will give it a valve grind, oh shades of British repairs from ages past.

Yes Doddsy, I knew that was coming and I had a choice of other machinery some of it not Honda but going to a CX rally I just had to bite the bullet and go on a CX Turbo.  A Custom just might have been something else.

I tallied up the fuel for the 6,130kms traveled by the 650ED and the total is 257 liters- equates to 22.95km/litre or in understandable numbers 64 miles per gallon.  Given that most of the journey was at highway speed not too bad.

I was unable to calculate the Turbo consumption due to Coops habit of filling two bikes from one pump and then paying alternatively.  However the two Turbos used about the same fuel and given that Coops on the 650T probably has a more enthusiastic riding stile than me on the borrowed smaller unit it still indicates something.
