Final drive leak
« Started on: 31-May-20, 11:57 »
Hi All, seem to have a leak/seepage at the final drive of the CX500B-there's a  small oil drip at the lipped "breather" at the the bottom of the unit and some thick greasy residue on the final drive case visible externally (not fouling the tyre)

Question is can the first seal (70x90x8) and Oring be got at easily?-or special tool needed?  (FSM quotes 07910-3710000).
(Am I)better trying this first or just attempting to source a spare used unit for swap-over?

thanks in advance

It's been a while (about 7 or 8 years), but I thought that replacing the big O ring was straightforward enough.

I also got one from my local bearing shop.

Going beyond that big O ring looked very challenging though. :crash:

Hi Doddsy-did you mean #29? and did it stop any oil seepage?
Special tool to get at it?

Yep.  29 was it.

It's an old memory, but replacing that or number 30 stopped my oil leak at the time.

The service manual made anything else look too hard.

I know I replaced the large one & I remember buying the smaller on as well, but I don't remember of I used it.

The #10 part came off with a punch & a gentle-ish hammer if I remember correctly.  A bit like a clutch plate nut.

Thanks again-will try (O-rings) this weekend as the initial step.

Any feed-back on this problem?  I'm experiencing similar on the CX650.

the leak was greasy residue plus an oil drip.

I went in and replaced the o-ring behind the wheel flange and on the final drive ONLY.
Washed down the whole final drive area liberally with low odour kero....dried....regreased the splines.

ATM No drips/oily crud....

BTW using mineral oil in the final drive will lessen small leaks

Thanks for the reply.  Could you clarify the Nos. of the o-rings that you replaced?

Number 30 in the drive diagram at post 2.
O-ring 62.7x4 (Generally NLA-but easily sourced)

And the one behind the wheel flange number 11...O-ring 54x2.4. (Available)  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Great, that's really clear now.
