The story of this bike was told in several episodes, I will endever to rack them all down and there was indeed a new frame but I think the original swing arm was used.

It would be interesting to see one of these unclothed. Does it retain a partial CX frame or was it all new work?

If all new work relationships between components may have changed from CX specs necessitating changes to the driveshaft. Perhaps breaking at a point of modification.

I've never heard of or seen a failed driveshaft or uni in a CX.

The power being equal the only other changes are weight. I doubt this would cause this issue either given the ongoing abuse many CXs have had.

A cut and shut shaft would be my guess in the face of almost no facts.....  rolleye0012

The article only describes broken drive shafts, no mention of uni joint. But even the uni joint on CX's is quite robust against the torque available.

This one was built by Defazio.

Broken driveshaft or uni joint? The bike looks lower than stock so perhaps a driveshaft angle issue breaking unis?

That's a great collection of thoughts. Quite a few things in there that resonate for me.

Here are some pictures of a feet forward project CX500 with hub centre steering.  This machine was featured in some old magazines I have been going through to discard.  This particular issue was Motorcycle Sport May 1987.  The machine eventually wore out the big ends and came to an end.  The question is this thing broke the drive shaft drive 3 times causing brake downs on tours of France and other parts of England.  Has anyone here ever broken a drive shaft? Would a 500 ever have enough power (torque) to do that?  I can't recall any mention of such a thing happening to anyone here other than some worn flanges at the wheel end particularly 650's.
About 50 of these FF things were made and the pity is no further development occurred after 1990.
If anyone would like the magazine let me know.
