It IS broke......I'm TRYING to fix it..

« on: February 07, 2010, 08:25:14 AM »

Hey all - have just purchased one of these cheap top boxes from ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/motorcycle-scooter-top-box-28-lt-super-special-price_W0QQitemZ250564441360QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Motorcycle_Parts_Accessories?hash=item3a56cdf510

Anyone else got one and know how easy they are to fit? (mine hasn't arrived yet)  It says it includes a fitting kit, but I have no idea how this works.

Have come up with an idea to fit it by making up some grab rail mounts, but curiosity is getting the better of me..

Anyone fitted one/similar before?

Cheers.

Clarky.

clarky,

you need a flat surface to mount a plate on and the box locks into the plate.I have a flat rack for my cx and made two wooden plates to allow the plate to be screwed into to provide the support needed,

Ok - so the fitting kit only provides the fittings to mount the box to the plate - I have to buy/make the rack myself I assume?

Yes i have one fitted to the 500 you can make them out of normal type racks with a bit of cutting and welding it depends on what rack you have as to what you have to do. I have cut the top bet off a gearsack one and fitted the plate to the flat bit left over. Keep the piece though cause you can always weld it back on if you change back later.

Thanks guys - appreciated.  Will let you know how I get on (I can feel some good old fashioned over-engineering coming on...  )

You might find it easier to make the "flat plate" out of plywood, as I did.   But make sure it is well protected with paint, varnish, etc.

Well, after a bit of head scratching, I finally gave up and bought a luggage rack from the states on ebay (ouch - don't ask!)

Fitted fine - just had to make some 4mm spacers up to lift the seat, as it wouldn't lock down as it was fouling the extended grab rail mounts, other than that it was easy. Box mounts nicely to it.  Can stop dropping things on the road that I've stuffed down my jacket now.

Looks neat, good engineering usually does look neat.
